Glera is considered an old variety and its original name Prosecco was derived from the village of Prosecco near Trieste, where this grape may have originated.

It is believed that this popular variety was grown as early as Roman times, probably as vinum pucinum, which was praised by Pliny the Elder, although it is not known with certainty.

Glera was originally called Prosecco, but was renamed "Glera" in the EU in 2009 to create space to protect "Prosecco" as the name of a protected wine.

Glera is a relatively neutral grape variety, grown mainly for use in sparkling Italian wine styles, frizzante or spumante, from various areas of Prosecco DOCG and DOC. It is grown mainly in the Italian region of Veneto, traditionally in the area near Conegliana and Valdobbiadene, in the mountains in the north of Treviso.
